José Pedro Lopes

José Lopes is a PhD student attending the PhD in Computational Media Design at the University of Coimbra. With a strong background in Design and Multimedia, having completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the same institution, José got fascinated by the power of memetic images and their ability to convey complex ideas in a concise and engaging manner. It was during his master's program that he explored the areas of Computer Vision and Computational Creativity to develop a system capable of creating memes in the "Stonks" format, using algorithms of natural language processing, image analysis and image blending.
In his PhD research, José is focused in developing a comprehensive system that not only allows individuals to create and share their own memes but also assists them in understanding and interpreting the often nuanced and context-dependent messages behind these images.
